Relationships

Walk outside your front door and take a look at your neighbors. Chances are, you’ll see an array of households that don’t necessarily look like yours—or those you remember from your neighborhood when you were growing up... "Because there are so many types of living arrangements, it’s really no longer possible to talk about a ‘typical’ American household,” said Rosemary Gliem, director of Ohio State’s Extension Data Center.

In Stark County, as well as nationally, relationships within families/households are changing. Through the 1990s, the rate of marriage in Stark County decreased and slightly more than 50 percent of those marriages ended in divorce. As a result, the number and percentage of married couple households in Stark County continues to decrease. Multigenerational households are more prevalent. More young adults are staying at the family home longer or having left, are returning to live with the family. Locally and nationally an increasing number of children are being raised by relatives other than their parents. The trends described above could be a result of a change in social attitudes, economics or other variables.

Between 1990 and 2000, the percentage of nonfamily households increased 3.7% to 30.5%.
